Update on Perth Training, Sail Melbourne, Training at VIS & SYC adventures.

Over the past two months Laura (my coach) and I have had two camps in Perth with Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands for Worlds preparation. Perth is the venue for the ISAF Worlds which is the Olympic country nomination and selection. The first camp was for two weeks and the second was a four-day racing regatta where we invited only the top girls to compete. Laura and I took the time to really settle into Fremantle and to find all our favourite spots in preparation for Worlds

Back at home I have been in solid training with Johnny Rodgers of the VIS along with Jeremy O’Connell my training partner. We went out one day on the bay where a big southerly buster hit against a 25knot northerly. We decided to use the northerly to sail downwind to Frankston and use the southerly to get home. We didn’t factor in the thick bolts of lightening! I can tell you I definitely found my downwind speed into the club that day.

Training has also included time spent in the VIS gym with Ben Willey lifting weights and interval sprint cardio. Once ticking all these boxes it was time for Sail Melbourne.

Sail Melbourne was a great event with conditions from every direction. It was a well run, organised event without a glitch on or off the water. I finished up coming third overall after climbing back from 9th on the leaderboard.  I am happy with my performance over the event which has now helped me confirm we are on track for Perth Worlds in December.

In preparation for Perth we have been using the sports science team at VIS to help us acclimatise for the harsh heat of Perth. It is common to see 37 degree days which can have a huge effect on performance. The team at VIS introduced us to the heat tent! Everyday for a week and a half we cycled for an hour in 35degrees with 33% humidity. Oli Tweddell our top finn sailor, Jeremy and even my coach Laura spent the hours in the tent teaching our bodies how to cope for Perth.

Yesterday I arrived into Perth to collect my charter boat and start the final preparations before the Worlds that begin on the 5th December.
