Australian Laser Championship day two and the weather on Botany Bay didn’t turn out to be as expected. The 15-20 knots NE battled with the gradient wind all day creating variable conditions of 12-8knots. The Race Committees had a tough time, more so on Course A where the Standards and 4.7’s race, due to the area being closer to the land. A lot of course changing was required between races and they did an excellent job to get a quality race at the end of the day making it as fair as possible. Botany Bay provided an excellent race track for the opening day of the 2011 Australian Laser Championship. The 16-20knots NE wind whipped up a short sharp chop which created gruelling upwind legs, testing fitness and technique. Ashley Stoddart along with many others commented that; 'upwind was pretty hard work but it was worth it for the fun on the downwind!' In the Laser 4.7 Class there is a good mix of girls and boys in the top ten with Sophie Chesterman from Tasmania the highest placed girl in fifth after scoring an eight and four. Queensland’s Madison Kennedy is in seventh overall after opening her regatta with a second place followed by a 13. Just one point behind in eighth is Milly Bennett from NSW. The boys...

The 2011 Australian Laser Championship start today at George’s River Sailing Club. 189 entries from seven States will race on Botany Bay for the chance to win one of four National titles; 2011 Australian Laser Champion, 2011 Australian Laser Radial Champion, 2011 Australian Laser Radial Women’s Champion and 2011 Australian Laser 4.7 Champion. The Laser is the world’s most popular sailing class. BEIJING Olympian Krystal Weir has her 2012 London Games campaign off to a flyer, leading the Aussie charge at this week's Sail Melbourne regatta at Sandringham. The Brighton resident is among five women fighting to represent Australia in the Laser Radial class at the 2012 Games, with just one spot up for grabs. Weir, 25, said she was determined to make the most of her hometown event. "This is a really important event for me, this could ultimately decide if I go (to London)," Weir said. "Sandringham is my home club, so I'm going to make the most of this event." Currently in 14th place after yesterday's events, Weir is 11 points ahead of her closest Australian competitor.
