Krystal Back in the Laser for London 2012

At the end of 2008, I announced at Sandringham Yacht Clubs “Meet the Olympians” function that I would be campaigning towards Gold in London 2012 in the Laser Radial. I have decided that it is time to jump back into the boat and begin campaigning.   Over the past year, I have taken time out to continue my studying at Sydney University Physiotherapy and also spent the summer learning how to race the RSX Olympic Windsurfer. My goal has always been to be an all round sailor and learning how to windsurf has helped form a different dynamic to my sailing. Queensland Laser Camp

Over the past week I have been training up in Queensland at a joint Yachting Queensland and Yachting Australia Camp run by Fletch and Adrian with help from Ken Hurling. It was a great camp with onwater training, rig measuring and lectures on tactics and techniques. Full rig boys jumped back into the Radial to give all the Girls and Youth Boys come tough competition. Brisbane really provided the winds with 15-18knots everyday. The winds and chop of Morton Bay really has prepared me well for my first event in Europe, Holland Regatta at the end of May....

Windsurfing at SailSydney

It has been a while between updates as I have been solely focused on one thing and that is to get through my Physio course at Sydney Uni. My last exam was last week and with that box ticked I can move forward and get back onto the water. Sydney International Regatta is coming very quickly! We have a weeks training before the regatta on Sydney Harbour where we will be lucky enough to have some of Australia’s best coaches Brendan Todd, Sean O’Brien and Jess Crisp coaching us on the RSX Windsurfer. Learning to Windsurf

It has been a while between updates as I have settled back into life at home at a more realistic pace. Over the past four years it has been non stop towards Beijing. I am now enjoying the more simple aspects of life. Since the Games I have been learning how to windsurf while studying at Sydney University Physiotherapy. My Sailing career has progressed from the Laser Radial to the Yngling Class. Both classes have developed my life skills considerably. The Laser class demonstrated the need for self-driven motivation, whereas skippering (the leader) the three person Yngling Class taught team cohesion and working together for team outcomes. New Direction

Over the past three months I have spent my time reflecting on what I have achieved so far in my sailing and where my new direction will be. Winning the Laser Radial Worlds in 2004, second at the Yngling Worlds 2008 and competing at the Olympics, all while travelling the World with a sport that I love has been a fantastic experience. During a meet and greet session for the Olympians at Sandringham Yacht Club I announced that I would be competing at the first World Cup 'Sail Melbourne'. Sandringham Y.C have been tremendously supportive over my campaign and it is hard for me to announce that the time is not right for me to be competing. As a team we put ourselves in a position to win. We have spent hours developing our up and downwind speed and our skills so that we can be a player. Opportunities will present themselves and it is those who are observant and patient to take them on the day that will win. In the first race of the Olympics we demonstrated that we had the potential as a crew to really shake up these Games as we comfortably went on to win the first heat. Olympic sailor Krystal Weir used a meet and greet session with the public at her home club yesterday, to formally announce Sail Melbourne in December would be the start of her 2012 London Games campaign. Seven members of the hugely successful Australian Olympic Team were at Sandringham Yacht Club yesterday and none were more enthusiastic about their future Olympic campaigns than Weir. The 23-year-old skippered an Yngling in Qingdao to a top 10 finish this year, however will jump back into her class of choice, the Laser Radial, for another tilt at an Olympic regatta. Yngling European Championships

Currently the team is in Riva Lake Garda for the Yngling Open Spring European Championships. As this was an open regatta Adrian our coach sailed onboard the boat in Karyn position while she went back to Australia to visit her family and attend the Yachting Australia Gala on behalf of the team. During this regatta it was really valuable for the team to have Adrian actually sailing onboard the boat, he was able to help Angela and myself with lots of different aspects of racing. We ended up winning the regatta which is great as this gives us confidence into the next lot of racing. Silver at Yngling Worlds

Twenty eight boats competed over six days to decide the Yngling Women’s World Champion, at the last World Championship before the Olympics this August. We, the Audi / Hamilton Island Australian Team, had a solid start in fairly strong wind, and backed this up with consistent placings on the remaining days. With the points being extremely close, we had to finish within 2 places of Germany in the Medal Race to hold on to our second place. We managed to do this, and so secured the silver medal. Making the Medal Race (Top Ten) was our goal- not counting on a podium finish in our second major international regatta as team!
